Season 1, Episodes 21-30

Rounding out Season 1 with some more little nuggets.

Episode 21: Dear Diary

According to the Episode Guide on the terrific Get Smart fan site WouldYouBelieve.com, the establishing shot of the Spy City Retirement Home is the estate of Burton Green.

Green was one of the leading oilmen in Los Angeles at the turn of the century, as president of the Rodeo Land and Water Company, naming the new company town Beverly Hills. Green's estate at 1601 Lexington Road was built in 1914 and stayed in the family until shortly after his death in May of 1965.

The building remains a private residence today. It is completely surrounded by tall trees, but an overhead view shows it still has the same basic structure.

Episode 22: Smart the Assassin

There are some interesting posters in the alleyway scene, particularly one for the "Georgia Minstrels All Star Cast". The Georgia Minstrels were organized in 1865, with 15 ex-slaves, and soon became one of the most popular touring acts in the U.S. Throughout the 1870s and 1880s they toured in the U.S. and around the world, and their popularity led to several other traveling acts using the Georgia Minstrels name.

Episode 25: The Amazing Harry Hoo

Establishing shot of "Washington Airport", also seen in Episode 24, "Stakeout on Blue Mist Mountain". This is actually Dulles International Airport.

Here is the airport today.

In the airport Max stands at a magazine rack. The prop magazines include several copies of "Western Range Stories".

You can see that prop magazine in the 1963 Steve McQueen film Love with the Proper Stranger.

The Hawaii poster can be seen in several episodes.

Hawaii . . . just a wish away.

Chinatown in San Francisco. It was tough to figure out the exact location. The useful clue turned out to be the sign all the way on the left, Super Cut-Rate Drug. That business was located at the corner of Stockton and Washington. I found it an old SF city directory. The angle of the shot is looking down Washington.

Here is that location today.

The shot of Chinatown at night was easier. The green and purple sign for Kuo Wah Cafe is one of the more famous ones from Chinatown in this era.

Here is a closer look at the sign.

Here is the location today, the corner of Grant and Washington.

Episode 26: Hubert's Unfinished Symphony

Badeff Concert Hall exterior. Not sure where this actually is.

The interior, however, is well known.

It is Royal Albert Hall in London.

Episode 29: Shipment to Beirut

As a New Yorker, I knew right away this was Fifth Avenue. The shot was filmed from the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 43rd Street. The street clock on the corner of 5th and 44th still exists and is landmarked. The tall building in the distance is 580 Fifth Avenue. The blue and orange flags are for the World's Fair, dating this footage to either 1964 or 1965.

Here is the view from the same spot today.

Episode 30: The Last One in is a Rotten Spy

The International Sports Club looks like a motel. I have no idea which one it is.

The cut-out newspaper is a funny bit. I like the details with the realistic ad for a clothing store and K.B.I. Camera Supplies.

A couple of camera angles give some glimpses beyond the motel. Not enough for me to identify anything. Some commercial buildings, including one with a billboard.

An interesting Spanish-style building - maybe a church?
