On to Season 3, with a lot more location filming!
Episode 1: The Spy Who Met Himself
We have a new location for the opening credits sequence. It is the Hall of Justice in L.A.
Here's the location today, with the same skyscraper to the right of the Hall.
You can see the words Hall of Justice and even a fallout shelter sign as Max enters the building.
Here is the spot today. The fallout shelter sign is long gone.
In the actual episode, we get some more action at Washington National Airport. Not stock footage this time, but Max (looks like a stand-in for Don Adams) running out of the airport. There are signs visible for the airlines flying into the airport: Eastern, Northwest, TWA, Lake Central, Mohawk and American. Only American is still flying today.
This spot is supposed to be across the street from the airport. It's not really, but it doesn't appear to be a studio set either. It may be a street right outside the studio.
Episode 5: Maxwell Smart, Private Spy
This building is used a few times in Season 3. Here it is an airport personnel entrance.
In this scene we also get the view towards the street. I wonder if this is a gate from the Studios. In season three, most production of the show moved from KTLA Studios to Paramount Studios.
In the chase scene that follows, most of what we see are prop houses within Paramount Studios. This looks like it might be a real street, though.
Same here, looks to be a block further on.
I love the old alpha-numeric phone numbers and will call them out whenever they appear, which isn't that often. Al's Linen Service, WA 7-9264.
Episode 6: Supersonic Boom
Max and 99 (undoubtedly stand-ins for Don and Barbara) drive past some Washington landmarks, starting with the Lincoln Memorial.
The road in front of the Memorial has been closed to pedestrian traffic since 1976.
Max's car passes in front of the Memorial.
Same spot today.
The next shot has them on Maine Ave SW, about to pass the Jefferson Memorial.
The same spot today.
Passing by a parking area by the water.
The area is more developed today.
Now going past the Jefferson Memorial.
Today.
Next shot, facing away from the Lincoln Memorial, across the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument, with the Capitol Building in the distance.
Today.
Later in the episode there is action at the Car Wash. (What does Car Wash mean in Spanish?) As Max and 99 drive past the car wash, they pass an Artist Supplies store. Unfortunately there weren't enough clues for me to figure out where this was.
We get several views of the car wash itself, but nothing giving away it's location. Presumably somewhere in L.A.
Finally a bit of stock footage of paratroopers jumping out of planes.
Episode 9: Dr. Yes
More stock footage - rocket launch
Episode 10: That Old Gang of Mine
Closing out this post with one more stock footage shot, of London's Big Ben.
The same location today.
