Closing out season three with a lot of fun little finds. Fun for me, anyway.
Episode 21: Operation Ridiculous
This season made a lot of use of the Paramount suburban streets backlot, where numerous family sitcoms were filmed. In this episode we get a good long view of the house from My Three Sons.
Here is what it looked like on that show.
Episode 22: Spy Spy Birdie
In this episode they film right in front of the My Three Sons house, giving a close-up view of that house.
I always thought the city with the explosion looks like New York, and after a lot of detective work I was able to figure it out. This is a view up the east side of Manhattan, filmed from around E. 47th Street and Second Avenue. The East River would be just out of frame on the right. The white building just right of the center of the frame is 321 E. 48th Street. The building with the two water tanks and the tall chimney, on the left of the frame, is 305 E. 47th Street.
After a long time searching, I was able to find a match, with this 1960s photo. Look at the tall blue building on the right of the photo. Immediately to the right you can see 321 E. 48th Street. You can even see the boxlike structure at the top of the building in front of it, just like in the Get Smart footage. A little to the left of that building, and you can see the dark water tanks and chimney of 305 E. 47th Street.
There have been many taller buildings obliterating this view built over the past 50 years. We can still get glimpses of the tops of these buildings from current Google Maps images. Here's 321 E. 48th . . .
. . . and 305 E. 47th.
Episode 23: Run Robot Run
There is a lot of great footage of the Los Angeles Coliseum in this episode. Mostly old footage, but some of Hymie's scenes were actually filmed there.
Lots of fans. I believe most or all of the old footage came from a USC track meet.
The start of a hurdles race.
Hurdling.
To the finish line!
Start the pole vault.
The vaulter leaps!
Here's where it gets interesting. It appears the vaulter is named Frank. I couldn't ID him, but I was able to identify another USC athlete who appears in the episode.
Pole vaulter #2 takes to the air
Up and over!
Does #3 look familiar?
It's Frank again!
The crowd is in disbelief.
Another crowd shot.
A brief high-jump shot, and we can see the athlete's name - Fleckenstein. George Fleckenstein was a freshman on the 1963 USC team that won the NCAA Track & Field Championship. Fleckenstein tied for first in the high jump. After his graduation in 1966 he was the Ferrero sales manager in charge of distribution of the candy at US military bases. He died in 2015.
The camera following a discus throw gave us a great panoramic shot of the Coliseum.
The discus makes impact.
Meanwhile, Hymie throws the discus out of the stadium, where it lands in a garbage can next to Aunt Rose, who gets up from a bus stop bench with a sign with an alphanumeric phone number - MA 2-1715.
The crowd gets up to watch Hymie.
Though it's not obvious from the footage, the track scenes with Hymie were filmed at the Coliseum.
Episode 24: The Hot Line
There's the same bench from the last episode - MA 2-1715.
The props department taped over the Champagne brand on the front of the box, but not the side. Pol Roger was born in France in 1831 and started his Champagne business in 1849. The brand still exists today, and is best known for being the favorite of Sir Winston Churchill.
Check out the slightly risque sign behind the Chief.
Do Not! Pinch the lady whose back is turned - it may be your wife!!
Episode 25: Die Spy
One of Kubacheck's disguises is actress Judy Lang, who played Mildred Spencer (the model KAOS turned into a mannequin) in "Shipment to Beirut."
Later in the episode we get some nice shots of European cities as the ping-pong tour progresses. Starting with Piccadilly Circus in London, with lots of advertisements - Players Cigarettes; BP World-Wide; Skol; Longines; Max Factor; Gordon’s Gin; Lemon Hart Rum; Wrigley’s.
The tour continues in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower, of course.
On to the canals of Venice.
Finally Istanbul, where the rest of the action takes place.
This episode referenced I Spy in the title, in the music for this scene, and with the cameo by Robert Culp. All it was missing was Bill Cosby!
Episode 26: The Reluctant Redhead
There's Bill Cosby!
Bill Cosby is a Very Funny Fellow, Right. (Not so funny now, of course.)
No CIC Agent under eighteen admitted unless accompanied by an adult spy.
The parking layout has changed since the 1960s.
Apparently the eye doctor who saw Mimsi Sage was named Robin Wade, with a degree from Norton College.
Once again we see the My Three Sons house.
