Lots of fun tidbits in these classics.
I Shot 86 Today (Episode 18)
This episode was filmed at Pomona National Golf Club, a small golf course in Walnut, CA.
At some point in the 1980s or 1990s the club name changed to Royal Vista. It closed in 2024, and there is a plan to build housing and a nature trail on the site.
We get a great look at the stylish logo for the course on the golf carts seen throughout the episode.
Most of the episode was shot in and around the center of the course, seen in the establishing shot at the beginning of the episode. This area faced the restaurant which is also in several scenes. However, when Chuck Cramer is hitting a golf ball at Frank Fargo at the beginning of the episode, he appears to be at the back of the course, with Walnut Drive on the other side of the fence.
Here is what that spot looks like today, from the street.
Dr. Simon got an autographed photo of the Los Angeles Rams after serving undercover with the team. That is a real 1968 Rams team photo.
Here is the full photo. The team just missed the playoffs, going 10-3-1 under Hall of Fame head coach George Allen. Hall of Famers Deacon Jones, Tom Mack and Merlin Olsen were on this team. Other notables include Roman Gabriel, Jack Snow and Jack Pardee.
Absorb the Greek (Episode 19)
The website Starring the Computer has identified the components of the dating agency's computer.
The tall section is a Burroughs B205 Tape Drive.
The longer section is an IBM AN/FSQ-7 SAGE panel.
When 99 looks down from the window washer platform, below them is a New York street scene. Specifically, it is the famous/infamous Rialto Theater on 42nd Street and 7th Avenue.
Here is a photo from around the same time. You can even see the same donut shop.
The Rialto and the era it represents are long gone. Now the view of the same spot would be of the modern office building 3 Times Square.
"Do you mind if I take a peek at the baby? Oh, isn't he cute? And Japanese too." The Chief was not correct, or at least not fully correct. Kalimar was an American brand, but their business was to import and re-badge cameras from other countries, including Japan. I don't know which model this camera was.
The KAOS Agents are playing the game Risk, with the board modified to cover the Parker Brothers logos with KAOS logos.
Here is what the full board looked like.
In the overhead view of the fight scene, a Risk box is also visible.
Here is what that box looked like.
To Sire With Love (Episodes 20 and 21)
Did Max and 99 get married at the Coronian embassy? The set is the same, the one originally used for Big Valley, that I blogged about here.
I noticed some fun little bloopers during the tarantula scene. Clearly they didn't want a real tarantula anywhere near Don Adams and Barbara Feldon, so a stand-in was used when they wanted to show the real tarantula crawling or or near someone. This led to a couple of bloopers. Here we see Don Adams in a long shot, not wearing a ring.
In the close-up, the stand-in is wearing a ring.
When we see Adams's face in the same frame as the tarantula, it is clearly a toy that looks very different from the real arachnid.
In Part Two we get a clearer look at the toy spider.
The toy spider met it's doom via a prop jar of horseradish. Alberta Horseradish is not a brand, but the Canadian province is a big producer of the vegetable. I also just really like the silly drawing of a horse and a radish on the label.
