Season 5, Episode 1

New season, new network, and lots going on in "Pheasant Under Glass", one of the best episodes of the series for cool prop linkages.

The spacesuits that Max, 99 and the Chief wear at the beginning of the episode have made a lot of appearances, with the last one perhaps the most important.

They were originally made for the 1966 movie Way, Way Out with Jerry Lewis and Connie Stevens.

Also seen in 1967's In Like Flint.

Also an episode of Green Hornet that year.

After appearing on Get Smart it was next seen in a 1971 Bob Hope Show.

Also in 1971's Escape to the Planet of the Apes. The history of these suits were documented by Apemania website.

Then most prominently in Star Wars! I love that there is a connection between my favorite movie and my favorite TV show. The suit is worn by a Duros in the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Possibly more than one.

Or more than two!

A character called Nabrun Leids wears the suit as well.

A 2024 Studio Auction catalog had Connie Stevens's suit up for auction. I'm guessing this would also have been Barbara Feldon's?

The Say Hello Spaceman website theorizes that the Chief's helmet, a different shape and size from the ones worn by 86 and 99, was worn by obscure background character Danz Borin.

We then come back to Earth and an interesting old house. Any ideas where?

After 99 drops a bombshell on Max we cut to the exciting new opening sequence, with quick cuts to the US Capitol . . .

. . . White House . . .

. . . Lincoln Memorial . . .

and Jefferson Memorial.

Another quick cut to a random city building - as a New Yorker it looks very familiar but I can't place it.

Then we cut to Max driving his new Open. I'm not sure but I think I can make out Los Angeles County Construction on the sign.

Finally the snazzy new logo as Max heads up the steps of a different courthouse from last time, this time the Los Angeles Superior Courthouse.

It looks pretty much the same today.

When we get back to the show Max is driving crazily away from the Lincoln Memorial.

Today.

Down the Arlington Memorial Bridge.

Today.

And out the other side. (The rest of the scene is on studio lots.)

Today.

Max knocks down a phone booth in front of a travel agency. We've seen that Hawaii poster a few times but Norway is a new one.

Here it is up close.

Later in the Chief's office we hear a record of opera singer Rosa LaCosta. When Max picks it up, we get a split second look at the real record, from the short-lived folk band October Country.

Prop paper time! The SF&F Chronicles site thinks that's not Don Adams on the left, but I'm not so sure. I do like that there's not only a headline but a visible sentence about Max.

There are three other headlines on this paper, and they make a lot of appearances over the years in other prop papers.

 Perry Mason (1965)

 Batman (1966)

Finally, ending with something really weird - why does Doctor Hector Proctor have that creepy doll head on his counter?
